In 2015, I signed up to a ‘start to run’ course at the athletics club in Schagen. I like running as it clears my head and improve my fitness. After the first ten weeks, I could run a 5K distance.
Next year, I participated in the Groet uit Schoorl run, a 10K distance. However, in 2017 I was diagnosed with rectum cancer. It took chemotherapy, radiations and five surgeries during a year and a half to cure it.
At the end of April 2018 I had my final surgery and started running again in July. I lost my speed, and found it hard to complete the run, but I am so glad that I can run again. It makes me feel alive!
Now I am running to improve my health and get stronger. I hope to finish the TCS Amsterdam 8K and keep running and training with the athletics club TAS ‘82. I hope to one day run a half marathon with my brother.
I want to thank Bibian Mentel, for her spirit, strength and ’never give up’ mindset. She is an inspiration!
