Finishing the 8km run at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon last year within 45 minutes was an exhilarating experience. While discussing the results with my friend, I said: “Next year I will run a half marathon.” Little did I know the power of words!
I started training in March this year. I had very little guidance or direction nor knew anyone who could help me train. In July I saw TCS was offering slots for ‘Dam2Dam’, a 16KM race. I decided to send out a nomination and was chosen.
With just 3 months to prepare and lots to achieve, I had a fight ahead. In a month’s time, I was able to run up to 8 km but the distance wasn’t enough to hit the target.
With each running milestone, I learnt more about running and what it takes to persist. In September, I completed Dam2Dam in 1 hr 45 minutes with no breaks. I had achieved something I never dreamed I could accomplish all the while overcoming hurdles like managing body heat and dieting.
For this years’ event, I have upgraded my distance to a half marathon and hope to achieve that.
I am very fortunate to have the support of my wife in my journey who encourages me do more. My inspiration comes from a 60 year old colleague in my office who often participates in runs ranging from 21 to 80 KM’s.
Through my achievements, I have learnt that we never know our limits. Once we start realising our potential, there are no limits.
